Merkel was the first female chancellor of Germany. During her tenure as Chancellor, Merkel was frequently referred to as the de facto leader of the European Union (EU), the most powerful woman in the world and since 2016 as the leader of the free world.

She served as the senior G7 leader from 2011 to 2012 and again from 2014 to 2021. In 2014, she became the longest-serving incumbent head of government in the EU. In October 2018, Merkel announced that she not seek a fifth term as Chancellor in the 2021 federal election. In 2022, Merkel condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
